I agree 100%. And if you really want a dose of real life, try it with someone practicing back at you!

I agree with practice. Tomorrow I get to practice building searches with simunitions.......Can't beat that for close to the real thing!

Congratulations, now go buy another preferably a .22 semi auto. It will be a lot cheaper for practice and the recoil will not shock your wife. Another thing, shoot reactive targets (I like soda cans) whenever possible, it’s more fun to watch the can jump than punching holes in paper.

I agree, we used to shoot milk jugs (w/water) with my buddies dads M1 carbine!

Re: IM LEGAL!!!

I don't think a NCIS pass necessarily means you're legal, although the delay and pass kinda implies they found what you were afraid of but it turned out not to prohibit ownership.

You may want to talk to a lawyer to confirm your legal status, but if you didn't lie on the form then I can't imagine why you would be prohibitted.

Hey Mtnman, you ever try the Hornady .17 HMR?
I recently purchased a Remington 22 cal. 597 Bolt Bull Barrel
and a .17HMR Savage w/ Bull Barrel so I could do some some inexpensive practice shooting (and comparison) over at the farm. Been a long time since I did much rifle shooting...last was in the M.C. during that Nam thing.

Used to shoot 22's and shotguns all the time as a youngster.

I have never been so amazed at the accuracy and destructive power of that little .17 polymer tipped .17 cal rifle!

22 was accurate and all but at approx 1500 fps vs. the .17/ 2500 fps velocity, there was no comparison.

22 was pretty accurate at 50 yds but the .17 was a real tack driver.

Found some fairly heavy ga. metal and set it up at about 25-30 yds.

The 22 LR dented it pretty well, but the .17 pierced it and left pencil-sized holes in the metal

The .17 would shatter bricks and concrete also...unlike the 22.

The coke can test...22 punched through with clean entry and exit holes.
The .17 destroyed the cans.

I could go on but you get the point. 22 would also penetrate and go completely through my constructed dense clay. The .17 expanded inside the clay leaving an incredible cavern inside.

You probably already know this, but if not, you might want to give it a try sometime. I think you'll be very impressed. The .17 is a necked-down 22mag.

I was so impressed, I bought a .17 S.S. Ruger Tracker with a 6.5" barrel...haven't tried it yet but will let you know.

Now I'm trying to locate a Mini 14 ( or something in .223) that I can afford. They ain't getting any cheaper!

Re: IM LEGAL!!!

jersey devil,
Shoot .38 spl out of it. MUCH lower recoil, easier on the pocket book also.

Then SLOWLY work your way up to .38 Spl +P - then .38 Spl +P+ - after getting used to both those higher pressure .38 Spl ammo, THEN step up to .357 mag stuff.

No need for another pistol unless you JUST GOTTA HAVE ANOTHER ONE.

This hobby can be addictive. I've bought and sold several hundred firearms over the past thirty five years or so.

WELCOME TO THE GUN CULTURE.

Do NOT forget eye protection and hearing protection. You should own your own stuff in the long run. It's not expensive and it WILL save your sight and your hearing in the long run.

If you've got any questions, drop me a line. I'll be glad to help.

.357 Wheel guns are my wife and mines favorite. We have several.

Again, welcome to the gun culture.

Yes I have shot the .17 and I was impressed but DAMN the rounds are expensive! I'll stick with .22 for practice. If it was me I'd stay away from the mini-14, not very accurate. If you want an American rifle I'd stick with the AR-15, about the same money as the Ruger and very accurate. Also lots of goodies available. And you already know how to clean it!!! It's like riding a bicycle, once you've learned you never forget how.

I can buy a box of 50 22-caliber rounds for $4.00. A box of 50 45-caliber rounds for my Taurus revolver costs over $30.00. If the aim is to practice, practice, practice, I can assure you that you'll do a whole lot more practicing with the cheaper ammo. And, since all the skills are transferrable to the higher caliber pistol, I think a second pistol for target practice makes a whole lot of good sense. A basic blue Ruger 22 semi-automatic is next on my shopping list--excellent value for the money.

I'd almost give some consideration to using the Ruger for my primary defense weapon (lots of people die every year in this country from 22-caliber injuries); but the rim-fire ammo is unreliable. Don't want a miss-fire in a life and death situation!

I used to go to an indoor range where you could rent a gun for $7 hr....I always went for the 22 cuz I could get lots more "bang" for the buck...sounds like a plan guys!
As far as safety equipment I work in a factory (RV's) and have loads of unused safety glasses and ear plugs...I know they are a MUST!

Re: IM LEGAL!!!

reloading could save you some money as well. I just want to reinforce some things that have already been said. Practice... not just shooting but safety. And going deaf is not manly. I have friends that think they're just so tough, they do not need hearing protection. What good is having a shotgun by the bed, if you can't hear the guy breaking into your car?

You can usually look up online what you want and order it. For example, when it comes into the FFL they can call me. I go in and then they call it in with my info for a background check, find out I'm not a BG, I then pay the $25 transfer fee and they hand over the firearm. I walk out the store with my new addition to the family. This week it is a "bouncing baby Glock 26" with night sights. While there I almost bought a rifle off the display wall but I showed emense restraint.

Better fill out the collections now people, because we have a communist "Lawn Jockey" and a senile facist "Nearly Dead" running for prez, and they both depise us gun owners. I fully expect one of the first acts under the new regime to be a reinstitution of the AWB and all that went with it and perhaps more restrictive gun laws overall (maybe with Sarah Brady as "Gun Czar"). Better get all the "Pre-ban" firearms now while you can.

Not to rain on anyones parade but the return rate on Taurus at my shop has been running 50% and am deciding on whether to continue any of their products.

On the one hand many folks ask specifically for Taurus, on the other I don't need bad mouthing because I sold a unreliable product.

I will not sell anymore S&W 329s, the light weight .44 Maggie simply breaks the freaking lock which then locks up the works.

We need our customers guns to work in the bush..
